Decolonial Routes, Knowledge, Spaces and Memories

On 20-23 May 2025, the 2nd edition of the decolonial summer university SIRA took place at the University Cheikh Anta Diop de Dakar, the Musée des Civilisations Noires and at the Island of Gorée in Senegal. Building upon the momentum of the inaugural decolonial summer university SIRA, held on 28-29 May, 2024 at the University of Chicago’s Paris Center, the second symposium aimed to further engage with the theme of “Decolonial Routes, Knowledges, Spaces and Memories”. As with SIRA 1, this event, in collaboration with GIRCI (Interdisciplinary Research Group on Cultures and Identities), sought to decentralize the hegemonic forms of knowledge by employing critical methodologies—whether anticolonial, postcolonial, or decolonial—in pursuit of epistemic justice. The selection of Université Cheikh Anta Diop in Dakar, Senegal, as the venue holds particular significance, as it embodies the decolonization of knowledge.

The ERC project AFROEUROPECYBERSPACE co-organized the event, which also included a panel on “Digital Archives and Podcasting”, moderated by Raoul Ngouna Lendira (U Omar Bongo) with presentations by (associated) researchers of the project such as Julia Borst, Nelson Sindze Wembe and María Ignacia Schulz, as well as Kalif Idil Oumalker (Ayeeyo Podcast):

In addition, the ERC team organized a French edition of the Afromayores photo exhibition at the University Library of the UCAD, which was opened by Laurent Leger Adame.
